Christmas Special

It's nearly December and the smell of Christmas is in the air. Quite often that smell is of a freshly cut Christmas tree nestling in the corner of your house or in some department store.

Fortunately most of these trees are grown on small farms, only cut down once a year and in relatively small numbers. In comparison, thousands and thousands of trees around the globe, including Australia's fragile forests are cut down every day causing untold damage to provide for our huge demand in paper.

Finally, there is an alternative to paper made from wood. JMP has managed to source a high quality white copy paper made entirely from bamboo.

Bamboo is a member of the grass family and grows at up to 10 times that of trees. It gives off more oxygen and absorbs more carbon. It does not require harmful pesticides and fertilizers to cultivate and uses very little water. It truly is the enviro-friendly paper choice.

For a limited time JMP is offering it's Frogprint brand of A4 Bamboo copy paper at below the price of Reflex paper, a well known product we all have probably used at some time. Frogprint is as bright and white as Reflex and can be used in the same printers and copiers with the same print results. But NO trees are touched to make bamboo paper!

Plastic Slipsheets

Reducing costs is always important to companies especially during times of uncertainty. Slipsheets can not only save an exporter money but increase the amount of shipping space available to them.

Slipsheets practically do the same work as pallets however they are about one tenth of the cost and are much smaller in size. An initial outlay for a push pull device will be required however these can be sourced from just a couple of thousand dollars.

Slipsheets are a thick sheet of plastic which is placed on top of a pallet or flat on the ground. The product is then placed on top and stretch wrapped in place. The push pull device on the forklift will then grab the slipsheet with the product from the pallet and bring it back onto the tines. This process can then be reversed as the slipsheet and product is loaded into the container.

This process creates more room and only costs around $3 compared to a plastic pallet which takes up more room and can cost in excess of $40.

Bamboo Copy Paper

The first product article I’m writing about is our newest product, so it seems fitting that it should be first cab off the rank. Frogprint Bamboo Copy Paper.

Not many people pay much attention to the copy paper they use on a daily basis, but they do know where it comes from, trees! Billions of sheets are fed through copiers and printers every day and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out a lot of trees need to come down to facilitate this demand.

In a recent trip to China JMP were introduced to a company that produces a vivid white copy paper, one that requires not one single tree to be lopped to produce it. This particular paper is made from 100% bamboo. It looks feels and prints like your regular Reflex style paper, however the secret to bamboo paper is its environmental advantages over tree-based paper.

The advantages are numerous. Bamboo is a member of the grass family and as we all know grass grows very quickly. Some bamboo species can grow a metre in one single day. That is an extreme case but on average bamboo will grow up to ten times faster than trees. Therefore it can be harvested and replenished at a far greater rate.

Bamboo will also give off up to 35% more oxygen than trees and absorb up to 4 times the amount of carbon! Definitely a carbon footprint worth exploring!

Bamboo also grows rapidly without the need for harmful pesticides and chemicals ensuring a cleaner and safer environment for those living within the plantation region and those involved in the manufacturing process.

A major problem with using trees for paper is the deforestation and uprooting of soil when felling trees. This can create a major imbalance to the eco-system and have ever lasting effects. No such problems with bamboo. Bamboo is actually cut above ground and the remaining section grows on for the next harvest. No uplifting of soil, no soil erosion!

Like normal paper, bamboo paper is 100% recyclable and re-usable and is now produced in a volume that makes apples for apples on price with your major brands such as Reflex.

Bamboo really is the next great product. Day by day I am seeing it infiltrate our lives more and more through many produdcts including copy paper, reusable fabric bags, manchester style products and even through the fashion industry.

Bamboo is definitely a great material and it also won’t cost the earth!!!

Introduction

Welcome to the JMP Holdings Packaging Blog. The aim of this blog is to help people find the solution to their packaging problems.

JMP Holdings began back in 1998 as a small family run operation based in Dandenong, Victoria and has since expanded by opening offices nation wide and overseas. We specialise in four main areas including retail packaging, disposable and compostable packaging, cargo care protection products and bulk product movement.

JMP is now based out of a purpose built warehouse facility in Mordialloc Victoria. Representatives of JMP travel the globe on a monthly basis sourcing the most advanced packaging products available. We have built a network of suppliers spanning across most continents and help develop products in order to meet the varying demands for each market we trade in.

Since day one, JMP has always placed a major emphasis on finding products that are enviro friendly. Throughout this blog I will introduce many products which have been developed with the sole intention of replacing older, less earth friendly alternatives.

JMP has never taken the ‘green’ angle lightly. Many companies come and go with false green claims, however JMP carefully analyses each option and ensures the right certifications have been met. A recent example of this is our approval for the compostable supermarket bag. JMP now imports a corn starch bio-plastic bag which has been certified to meet the Australian Standard AS4736:2006. This bag unlike standard plastic bags will compost 100% under the specified conditions. This bag can be used legally in states like South Australia, where legislation has been passed to control what packaging is allowed to be used in their retail and supermarket environment.

So stay tuned to the blog as I intend to update it product by product, week by week.
